It is possible that this attack was due to frustration over not being allowed to do his job properly (as a house-elf) but this isn't confirmed.
After leaving the ministry, he started working as an investigator for the Department of Mysteries where he found out about Voldemort's return and helped capture many of the remaining Death Eaters. During this time, he also started dating Lily Potter (daughter of Harry Potter). The two married after Voldemort was defeated.
